Parallel Construction

Parallel structure means using the same pattern of words to show that two or more ideas have the same level of importance. This can happen at the word, phrase, or clause level. The usual way to join parallel structures is with the use of coordinating conjunctions such as "and" or "or."

Words and Phrases

Example 1

         Not Parallel:
                                   we likes reading, watching a movie, and to ride a bicycle together.
         Parallel:
                                   we likes reading, watching, and riding a bicycle together.

Example 2

         Not Parallel:
                                   You could go the distance, you could run the mile, you could be the hero, you could
                                   get the gold.
         Parallel:
                                   You could go the distance, run the mile, could be the hero, and get the gold.
